How can I make myself stop being scared (tic disorder)?
I have been twitching semi-controllably for a week, so I went to the doctor and she said I probably have a tic disorder like tourette’s. I am going to get an EEG and go to a specialist. I went to school on monday and everyone was laughing at me. I am pretending to be brave for my parents, but I am so scared. The medication that I may get has some scary neurological side effects, and they may not even work. People look at me differently, and I have random panic attacks where i freak out about not being in control of my body. I may have to stop viola and horse riding. My parents forbade me from telling my friends. I am only a teenager. I just need someone to talk to. I am really afraid.
Sometimes these kind of ticks can be a result of stress. Have you been feeling like you are under a lot of stress? Try to think of what might be bothering you. It doesn’t help the tick any when the kids at school laugh at you. Be sure to let the specialist and your parents know what the kids are doing. I hope you will be feeling better soon and your tick will settle down. Good Luck.

Hey, I’m also a teen and have a tic disorder as well. It seems as the harder you try to eliminate one another one develops and the cycle continues. Like you, I saw a neurologist and he insisted it was very common, and will grow out of it in time. He also said that vocal/motor tics are very common in the developmental stages of people our ages and it is nothing to worry about. I doubt you have Tourette’s syndrome if the tic is semi-controllable. If there’s any advice I can give you is that when you feel that urge to tic take a deep breath and try to relax. Block out any stressors tha may irritate you and focus on peaceful things. One way in which I am coping with tics is by slowing my mind down. Sometimes, when im playing sports, or doing other things my mind gets going really fast which sets off my brain. Learn to slow your mind down and take life as it comes. It will go away eventually. Also, don’t worry about people in school picking on you, I went through this too. Its best that you just remain brave, and stay calm. I hope that helps you.
