The assumption in psychiatry that “mental illness” is permanent is untrue.
Many mental health problems such as depression, bipolar episodes, anxiety & psychosis are simply temporary acute states of mind which a person can fully recovery from.

Drugs like antidepressants, antipsychotics & anxiety medications can have long term side effects, may cause permanent neurological damage to the brain & in some cases and might actually slow down one’s recovery.

Journey of Recovery (2006) Bart Kean

In conjunction with Kean Digital Films, MHA/NC is pleased to introduce Journey of Recovery, an extraordinary documentary that takes a close look at mental illness. That is the message of this advocacy video created by the Mental Health ociation in New Jersey and Collaborative Support Programs in NJ. Through individual testimony, consumers of mental health services tell their story and explain the critical role NJs Community Mental Health System has played in their recovery. They speak of their experiences with depression, anxiety and schizophrenia and how they were successfully treated. Today, they are going to school, maintaining employment, and are reconnected with their families.

We cannot let NJs fiscal crisis threaten funding for these vital services that work.
