In part because of rejection rates during the World War II draft, concerns about the health - including mental health - of the U.S. population developed in the 1940s. The issue was further spotlighted by efforts to deal with readjustment of returning veterans. Hollywood films such as “Spellbound” (1945) and “The Snakepit” (1948) also highlighted the issue. This video provides a popular introduction to the issue. At the time, drug therapies often used today were not available. The only such therapy mentioned is insulin injection. Electroshock is shown as a treatment for depression. There is a vague discussion of brain surgery - perhaps a reference to lobotomy. A version of group therapy is also shown. Psychoanalysis is briefly referenced.

On Oct. 11, 2009 over 250 walkers joined the MHANJ at Johnson Park in Piscataway NJ to promote the importance of emotional wellness for ALL New Jerseyans. The money raised from this 5k walk helps the MHANJ to continue to fight the stigma that surrounds mental health issues through advocacy, education, training and services. Highlights accomplishments of the past year and provides an overview of mental health, mental retardation, substance abuse, prevention and early intervention services provided to the residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. Includes plans for new Sunshine Lady House for Mental Health Wellness & Recovery, funded in part by a $2 million grant from Doris Buffetts Sunshine Lady Foundation. Programs featured include DARE To Be You, Healthy Families, Program for Teen Parents, Project LINK, Rappahannock Adult Activities; and Rappahannock Area Kids on the Block.
