Get ahold of an academic counselor at the university you plan to transfer to. You should be able to get ahold of a curriculum check sheet for your program. Then verify that every course you take at the community college will transfer AND satisfy a requirement of the degree.

I know a couple people that got associates degrees at a CC only to find out that much of their coursework only transferred to the university as elective credit. They ended up taking a lot more courses than they needed to.
References :
Many schools are beginning to offer what they sometimes refer to as 2+2 plans, guaranteeing most if not all of your credits from the community college will transfer to the university and plug directly into your chosen bachelor degree. If your community college publishes a decent catalog, get a copy and look for this kind of degree plan. If your community college either does not publish a comprehensive catalog or does not mention a 2+2 plan, go see a counselor in their guidance department and ask about it.
References :
Talk to the admissions department at the university you're planning on transferring to. Chances are they'll tell you the same thing as the source you read: you need to focus on your general requirements like math, English, and science. If you have space for electives, you can fit performing arts classes in there.
